Lough Neagh is a very large lake located in Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. It's not just big; it's the biggest lake in all of Ireland! It's also the largest lake in the entire United Kingdom. Imagine a lake so wide that you can't even see the other side from one shore!
A Giant's Tale: How Lough Neagh Was Made
Long, long ago, Irish stories tell us about a mighty giant named Fionn mac Cumhaill (say it: Finn Mick Cool). One day, Fionn was in a big fight with a giant from Scotland. Fionn picked up a huge stone to throw at his enemy.
But he missed! The giant's throw landed far away, right in the middle of the sea. This giant stone became an island we know today as the Isle of Man. The huge hole left in the ground where Fionn had scooped up the stone quickly filled with water. And that's how, according to legend, Lough Neagh was formed!
